| He has worked with 35mm, 16mm, RED 4K, HD, and DV on both feature-length and short films. His work includes the short film "Universal Theories of the Duke of Zeppelin," which was selected for an Academy Award, won Best Film at the Southern Exposure Film Forum, and received a Cine Gold Eagle Award. He recieved critical acclaim for his work on "Little Girl Lost." The Winston-Salem Journal said, "The film benefits from Matthew A. Skala's evocative cinematography." |
| As a unit stills photographer, he has worked on several projects including "Two Soldiers," which won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short and Best Short over 15 minutes at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. |
| Skala developed his passion for art in high school where he took drawing and photography classes. He later studied photography at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and began work as a professional photographer. He pursued his vision further by exploring Motion Pictures at the North Carolina School of the Arts where he earned a BFA degree in Cinematography, and was honored with nominations for both an American Society of Cinematographers Award and the Budapest Cinematography Masterclass. |
| Matthew is currently working as a Cinematographer and Camera Operator in Los Angeles and abroad. Vision and collaboration drive his passion for projects. Producers, directors, actors and others speak highly of his work ethic and collaborative skills. He's known for being well prepared, yet spontaneous while quickly solving problems during prep and production. |
