Still Photographer Matthew Skala has a passion for imagery and a grasp on the power of the picture, and he strives to give his clients only the best. He shoots movie production stills, portraits and landscapes.

As a unit still photographer, Skala is a member of the Local 600, his extensive experience on movie sets and his knowledge of the many facets of filmmaking lends to his reputation of being invisible while still getting the perfect shot.

Skala shot the production stills for several movie productions, including Two Soldiers, which won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short and the Palm Springs International Film Festival award for Best Short Over 15 Minutes. Two Soldiers director Aaron Schneider (also an ASC cinematographer) praised Skala's work, which inspired the director to enhance the look of the motion picture.

As a portrait photographer, Skala brings out the true qualities of his subject. He gets to know his subjects and their environments, and he captures the natural beauty of the subject and the location. And he makes use of the natural light in the location.

As a landscape photographer, Skala has collected images from all over the world, has won prestigious contests, and sells his prints at a modest price point when available.

During his childhood years, Skala spent endless hours drawing sports cars. In high school, this passion for art developed into a passion for photography.

He later attended the Academy of Art College in San Francisco to study still photography. This expanded into an interest in motion pictures, which then led him to the North Carolina School of the Arts where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Cinematography.

With his background in still photography, filmmakers eagerly sought out Skala to shoot production stills for many of the productions at North Carolina School of the Arts.

Skala was honored with nominations for both an American Society of Cinematographers Award and the Budapest Cinematography Masterclass based on his work at the North Carolina school.

Since graduation, Skala has worked on both feature length films and short films as the unit still photographer, and he consistently shoots fine art portraits and landscapes.

            Producers, directors, actors and others speak highly of Skala's work ethic and his unique talent for capturing that perfect moment. His images prove his talent.

Skala strives to create memorable images while giving storytellers and publicists means to promote their films and archive the precious passing moments of the entertainment industry.
