Interviews

And for April, an interview reel. There is a lot to learn and get inspired about when shooting interviews. One of my most memorable experiences was with Quincy Jones.

I was shooting interviews for the documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World, and our small crew was invited to his house in Bel Air. We set up in his screening room and didn't have to wait long for him to arrive. With him in the chair, we made some final tweaks to the camera and lighting. He trusted us completely and his energy was very comforting. As the interview commenced, he told us stories about his work with Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, and others.

It was clear that these legends would have gotten nowhere if it wasn't for him. Yet, in the entire interview, he never took credit for anything. He spoke as if he was just a vessel for nurturing their natural talents, and without them, he too would have gotten nowhere. There was no pride or ego in it whatsoever, just satisfaction that he felt in fulfilling his role.

And on top of that, toward the end of the interview, he offered his insights on life and career—even touching on the spiritual side of life in a subtle and sublime fashion. It touched me deeply and I started to tear up a little behind the camera. It felt as if I might have met a genuine guru and I was elated for the rest of the week.

Enjoy the interview reel!
